DECIMA’S BERLIN DEBUT AND LAUNCH OF MAJOR NEW GALLERY!

Decima’s major art show in Berlin is a comment on how far we have come in the West since the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago, and whether there is any way back.

The event will begin with an opening at the BRAND NEW Kreuzberg Gallery “Art without Borders” and will conclude with a huge party of live music, performance, DJs, VJs and large-scale sculpture at a secret venue not far from the gallery – billed till 6am some of the best known club acts in Berlin will be palying. See separate event http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=134740388529&ref=ts

Our emigre artists have had enough of Britain and want to vent their spleens in what has ironically become the last bastion of hope for Europe and perhaps the world, Berlin.

Left vs Right

27/10/2009 by

leftvsright

A great visualization that contrasts left wing politics against right wing politics. I personally distrust anything that simplifies politics into this kind of binary and overly simplistic way (as there many shades of colour in between), but as an information graphic it’s wonderful. The full-sized readable graphic is available on this link.

Absinth tasting

16/10/2009 by

I was out last night, to my favorite little bar around Weinmeisterstraße (mitte) and got in talk with the owner, he offers Absinth tasting evenings for 15€ per person (minimum 5 people), which include 3 glasses of absinth in a seperate room from the bar.
it’ll take a few hours (talking about the drinks etc.)

Would anyone be interested in having a lemontown meeting there ?

Recap from Die Summe meeting on 15 October

16/10/2009 by

1 – Two musicians joined us at the meeting (but not as new Die Summe members)

2 – We voted to make sure meetings don’t go over 2 hours in length.

3 – The Die Summe website is about 90% finished.

4 – About first using Lemontown to meet potential Die Summe members rather than inviting people to Die Summe meetings outright: Undecided, but some members preferred inviting people through Lemontown.

5 – Die Summe logo: Neil showed us his proposal, well received, some felt the logo needed to be a bit bolder. But looking good!

6 – Legal structure: After discussion, the consensus was that ‘let’s cross that bridge when we come to it’. There was concern that the terms and conditions document that Daniel sent to us was too complex for our needs.

7 – Finders fee: it was suggested that people for find work for Die Summe get a 10% finders fee. 25% seemed too high, although standards vary depending on the kind of creative work. Some members thought 25% was good incentive for people to find work. Need to vote on this.

8 – Promoting Die Summe:

- Suggestions from Mark: use Crew United and other social networking sites (Twitter, Facebook, Myspace) to promote ourselves. For that matter, Das Auge, Toytown, Xing. Also to get in touch with Zitty magazine, as their journalists could be looking for material to cover. Make friends with some journalists!

- Xavier’s short film The Line will be showing on Nov 6, and offered to help promote Die Summe there. Neil will work on simple black and white flyers for this event.

- We decided that the sole agenda point for next meeting will be marketing, and by the end of that meeting, we’ll have a fixed marketing plan. The Die Summe website will be live within the next week, and members can start adding their work. Members will spend some time thinking about how to market Die Summe, and come prepared for this meeting.

Berlin fonts

14/10/2009 by

This demands a little story, I was looking for the font used on street signs in Berlin, and I bumped into this paper, which I found interesting and Justin was interested in seeing it, so instead of mailing it to him directly I thought I would share it here.

It’s the designer of the current street sign font who’s written this paper about the fonts used in Berlin, not just on street signs but also on the hand painted signs on shops and facades. there are some interesting discoveries, if you are into this sort of thing :)

warning, it’s 12 pages pdf file, no movies, no music, just text and some pictures:

enjoy :)

Die Summe…..Our second meeting on Thursday 15th Oct at 7.30pm

12/10/2009 by

Die Summe is a Berlin-based community of filmmakers, writers, artists, and designers promoting themselves and their work under a common banner, and a collective who will actively find projects and art to work on together. The point is to get paid for doing creative work, both individually and as a group. Daniel, Neil and Justin have been working on a website for Die Summe where members can have a page for themselves to showcase their work, and for us to promote the group as a whole.

After the meeting, we’ll of course have a few drinks. Please post in the comments below if you will attend. See you there!

Location: Sowieso, Neukölln (click for map). Address is Weisestraße 24. Nearest U-Bahn stop is Leinestraße, on the U8.

Time: 19:30h, Thursday, 15th October.

We are paying for the room so please try to be on time. Cost of the room (€5 per hour) is divided between number of people who attend.

See you on Thursday.

Oscar winner German shorts

30/09/2009 by

Since others involved in design or visual arts in the group post events related to their craft, I thought I´d post events related to film, since I´m a film maker in the group. So here´s my first:

Today in Babylon Kino – Mitte there will be a special screening from the group “Shorts Attack!” where German short films that had won an Oscar award will be screened. It starts at 21:30. More info here:

http://www.interfilm.de/s-a-aktuelles.php

I´ll be there for sure!

P.S.: Thanks to all that made it yesterday to our small Premiere, it was a lovely evening.

Die Summe: Do you want to be a member?

Die Summe is a Berlin-based community of filmmakers, writers, artists, and designers promoting themselves and their work under a common banner, and a collective who will actively find projects and art to work on together. The first meeting, which you are all invited to, will take place in Sowieso at 19:30h this Thursday evening, the 1st of October. We’ll introduce the idea in more detail, and propose a timeline to get up and running, and discuss how to market ourselves. We also want to hear your own expectations and ideas for how to develop Die Summe in the weeks to come. The website will be a tool to help you, so it would be valuable to hear your ideas of how the site can help you.

And then after the meeting, we’ll of course have a few drinks. Please post in the comments below if you will attend. See you there!
